An individual earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the period preceding Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

However the odds had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.

A small number of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on recently seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from elections to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
